In an effort to revive the economy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a Rs 20 lakh crore package, which combined the government’s recent announcements on supporting key sectors as also measures rolled out by the Reserve Bank of India. PM Modi also said that centre will enforce a fourth lockdown- with a lot of modifications. The details of the fourth lockdown will be communicated by May 18, said Modi. He termed it as the ‘Atma Nirbhar Abhiyan’ Package.

He also hinted at big-ticket economic reforms in coming days, adding details of the economic package will be given by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman starting tomorrow.

The package will spur business, attract investment and strengthen our Make in India Mission, reiterated Modi. The package is equivalent to 10 per cent of India’s GDP, stated Modi. The Special economic package will have emphasis on land, labour, liquidity and laws.

The novel coronavirus has brought a new opportunity for India by helping it upgrade its existing health infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his third address to the nation on the Covid-19 lockdown. Citing instances of India’s effort towards polio eradication, International Solar Alliance and global convention on climate change- Modi highlighted India’s role in global order. India’s response to the ‘Kutch Earthquake’ is a testimony to our collective mindset.

The address comes a day after the Prime Minister held a video-conference with chief ministers on the Covid-19 situation. Modi also said in the meeting that states will have greater say in determining the extent of restrictions and relaxations after May 17. The country is in the third phase of lockdown which will end on May 17.

India’s Covid-19 count has reached 70,756, while the number of deaths due to the infection stood at 2,293. Maharashtra, with 23,401 confirmed cases is the worst-affected so far and is followed by Gujarat with 8,541 cases.
