NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said his government is targeting to make India a global hub of artificial Intelligence.

The Prime Minister was speaking at the inauguration of a
virtual
summit on artificial intelligence ‘
RAISE
2020‘, which is being jointly organised by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the NITI Aayog.

Talking about the potential of Artificial Intelligence in changing lives, the PM said: “Artificial Intelligence can play big role in creating next generation urban infrastructure. It can also help in strengthening our disaster management systems.”

He also highlighted the various government schemes and projects making use of Artificial intelligence.

“We launched ‘Responsible AI for Youth’ program this year in April. Under this programme, more than 11,000 students from schools completed the basic course. They are now building their AI projects,” he said.

“”We are home to World’s largest Unique Identification system-Aadhaar. We also have the world’s most innovative digital payment system – UPI. This has enabled access to digital services including financial services like direct cash transfer to poor,” he added.

The PM also said that the new National Education Policy 2020 would facilitate technology-based learning and skilling.

“India has recently adopted the National Education Policy 2020. It focuses on technology-based learning and skilling as a major part of education. E-courses will also be developed in various regional languages and dialects,” he said.

Modi, however, also said that the world needs to be protected against weaponisation of artificial intelligence by non-state actors.

‘Responsible AI for Social Empowerment
2020‘ (
RAISE
2020) is a global meeting to exchange ideas and chart a course for using AI for social transformation, inclusion and empowerment in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, education and smart mobility.

The 5-day summit will end on Oct 9.
