Vikas Dubey killed in encounter by UP police: Who said what | India News

NEW DELHI: The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh Police said that gangster Vikas Dubey was killed in an ‘encounter’ on Friday morning after ‘he tried to escape’ and was shot by the police. The encounter expectedly drew a flurry of reactions. While some said that Dubey got what he deserved, given his long list of crimes and last week’s ambush that killed eight UP policemen, others called the encounter a failure on part of UP Police hindering the process of justice that was due for Dubey in a court of law.
Here is who said what:
Father of martyred constable thanks UP Police
I am very proud of the Uttar Pradesh Police. Whatever they have done today has brought solace to my soul. I thank the administration and the Yogi government, said Tirath Pal, father of constable Jitendra Pal Singh who lost his life in an encounter at Bikru village in Kanpur on July 3.
Samajwadi Party claims political motive behind Dubey’s encounter
Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav taking to Twitter said that the gangster was killed on purpose to keep his political connections hidden.

Rais Shaikh, a Samajwadi Party leader, said that the details of how the encounter took place is a poorly written script inferencing that the police was lying about Dubey being shot while trying to escape.

Congress calls for enquiry into co-accused also killed in encounter
Congress spokesman Surendra Rajput said: “Our fears have come true. After his surrender in Madhya Pradesh yesterday, I had voiced my apprehension whether Vikas Dubey would be brought back safely. The encounter theory of the STF is surprisingly similar. Both Prabhat (who was killed in an encounter on Thursday) and Vikas were killed in police custody. The entire episode calls for a high-level inquiry.”
Senior Congress leader Jitin Prasada said: “With the end of Vikas Dubey in custody, the government has ensured that the trail which would have exposed his nexus with people in positions of power who allowed criminals like him to flourish, has ended too.”
Congress leader Asha Kumari said that the encounter was a failure of law and order in the state.

STF founder questions ‘script writers’
A senior police officer, who has been one of the founding officers of the STF in Uttar Pradesh, said that it does not make sense for someone to surrender on Thursday and try to escape on Friday, reported IANS. “The Special Task Force (STF) now has very bad scriptwriters and the Vikas Dubey story proves it. Why would someone, who had surrendered on Thursday in Madhya Pradesh to escape being killed, try to escape on Friday,” said the officer as reported by IANS.
Petition was filed hours before encounter
Hours before Vikas Dubey was killed in an encounter, a petition in the Supreme Court demanded urgent listing for action into the possible “killing” of Dubey by UP Police since other accused involved were killed in an encounter. Petitioner demanded a CBI monitored probe in the encounter of four other co-accused who had killed UP police officials. The plea had mentioned the possibility of the petition being rendered infructuous if not listed urgently.
Twitterati say they saw the encounter coming
Writer Sanjukta Basu questioning the functioning of the STF team said that the police was transporting a high-profile criminal and could have used modern tech like drones to record the journey.

Tehseen Poonawalla said that he was among those who had predicted that Dubey might be killed in an encounter and questioned the current state dispensation under chief minister Yogi Adityanath.
