As previously announced, Emilio Estevez is reprising his role as Coach Gordon Bombay for the 10-episode series. Estevez previously starred in all three Mighty Ducks movies. The series also stars Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) as Alex Morrow and Brady Noon (Boardwalk Empire) as her son Evan. The cast of aspiring hockey stars also includes Maxwell Simkins, Swayam Bhatia, Luke Islam, Kiefer O’Reilly, Taegen Burns, Bella Higginbotham and DJ Watts.
The trailer reveals Bombay is now living a quiet life as the owner of the Ice Palace skate rink, at least until Alex and Evan stumble into his life hoping to form a new hockey team. Having been cut from the current incarnation of the Ducks, which has become an elite but exclusionary team in the years since Bombay’s retirement, Evan hopes to prove hockey is a sport for everyone, regardless of ability or resources. In short, it sounds like the Mighty Ducks series is entering its Friday Night Lights: Season 4 phase.
“Once a Duck, always a Duck!,” said Estevez after his role was officially confirmed last year. “And after 25 years, I am delighted to lace up my skates, put on Coach Bombay’s jacket and return to play the iconic character for this new chapter in ‘The Mighty Ducks’ franchise. Likewise, I am thrilled to return to my old stomping grounds with my friends at Disney and Steve Brill, the original creator of the franchise, to join them on their exciting new platform, Disney+.”
