The Flash Director Explains Ben Affleck’s ‘Substantial’ Batman Role

Director Andy Muschietti has opened up about Ben Affleck’s return to the DC Extended Universe for The Flash, revealing that Batman will play a “very substantial part” in elevating the movie to an all-new emotional level.Speaking to Vanity Fair, Muschietti discussed the relationship between Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen and Affleck’s Bruce Wayne, hinting that their emotional connection would form a significant part of the scripts (which, by the way, only landed on Affleck’s desk at the “end of last week.”)“He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before,” Muschietti explained. “It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”

Although Muschietti kept many other details under the cowl, he indicated that Affleck would be swooping into a story that’ll allow him to deliver a multi-faceted performance as the caped crusader.

“His Batman has a dichotomy that is very strong, which is his masculinity—because of the way he looks, and the imposing figure that he has, and his jawline —but he’s also very vulnerable,” Muschietti said about Affleck, who formerly played Batman in Batman v Superman and Justice League. “He knows how to deliver from the inside out, that vulnerability. He just needs a story that allows him to bring that contrast, that balance.”Adding to the conversation, producer Barbara Muschietti revealed why Affleck agreed to sign back on as Batman, especially after announcing his exit from the role at the beginning of last year.

“There have been some all sorts of stories and things he said himself about having a very hard time playing Batman, and it had been difficult for him,” Muschietti reflected back on the aftermath of Affleck’s departure from the role. “I think it was more about a difficult time in his life. When we approached him, he’s now in a very different time in his life. He was very open to it, which was a bit of a surprise to us. It was a question mark.”

“We are all human and go through great times in our lives and terrible times in our lives,” she added. “Right now he’s in a place where he can actually enjoy being Batman. It’s a pivotal role, but at the same time it’s a fun part.”

Every Modern DC Movie Review

Affleck is the second Batman that we know to be making an appearance in The Flash, as it was previously reported that Michael Keaton, who donned the Bat-cape in the Tim Burton movies, will also be reprising his version of the character.

In the absence of a big DC presence at [email protected] this year, more news about The Flash and several other DC projects is expected to be revealed at the upcoming DC FanDome virtual convention, a two-part event that officially begins on Saturday, August 22. So be sure to check out IGN’s breakdown of the schedule, which includes details of the panels, how to watch, and much more.
