Second wave of coronavirus in India: Top developments | India News


NEW DELHI: India on Sunday reported a surge of over 2.61 lakh cases, its highest daily count by far since the pandemic.
The second wave of the coronavirus is proving to be much more severe for the country with cases going up at an unprecedented speed.
While Maharashtra continues to add the highest number of cases, other states have also started reporting their highest ever cases in recent states.
The inflection has led to shortage of medical oxygen and beds in many states. CM Arvind Kejriwal today said Delhi has less than 100 ICU beds left.

Mos V K Singh requests a bed for his Covid positive brother
Minister of state for transport ministry and former Army chief Gen VK Singh(Retd) on Sunday tagged the DM of Ghaziabad in a tweet, requesting for a bed to be made available for his brother.
The tweet by the former Army chief immediately went viral, with many pointing to the tweet to highlight the severity of the situation in the country.

Less than 100 ICU beds left in Delhi, facing oxygen shortage: Arvind Kejriwal
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said less than 100 ICU beds are vacant in Delhi hospitals, and the situation is worsening every moment.
He said that he spoke to Union home minister Amit Shah this morning and stressed on the need for making more beds available.
Kejriwal also said around 25,500 new Covid-19 cases have been reported in Delhi and the positivity rate has increased to nearly 30 per cent in the last 24 hours.

India’s Covid positivity rate doubles to 16.69% in 12 days, says govt
The daily coronavirus positivity rate in India in the last 12 days has doubled to 16.69 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate has increased to 13.54 per cent in the past one month, the health ministry said on Sunday.
Ten states — Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan — reported 78.56 per cent of the new infections, it said.
“The daily positivity rate in the last 12 days has doubled from 8% to 16.69%,” the ministry said in a statement. “The national weekly positivity rate has increased from 3.05% to 13.54% in the last one month.”
Over 2,61,000 new cases in last 24 hours, 1501 deaths
India reported a record 2,61,500 new coronavirus cases and 1,501 deaths on Sunday, while active cases have surpassed the 18-lakh mark, the ministry data stated.

Sunday’s rise marks the the 39th day in a row when the cases have increased in the country. The active cases, standing at 18,01,316, comprise 12.18 % of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has dropped to 86.62%, the ministry said.
