Save 20% on the Google Nest Audio

SAVE $20: As of Feb. 24, the Google Nest Audio is on sale for only $79.99 at B&H Photo Video, Best Buy, Target, and the Google Store as of Feb. 24. (It usually retails for $99.99, so you’re getting 20% off.)

In the $99 smart speaker showdown between last fall’s Apple HomePod mini, Amazon Echo, and the Google Nest Audio, who reigns supreme?

After taking each of them for a test drive, Mashable tech reporter Brenda Stolyar noticed “plenty of differences between each one that might sway your opinion.” Ultimately, though, she gave the crown to the Nest Audio for several reasons: It looks great, its companion app is easy to use, it’s compatible with lots of other smart home accessories, and its voice assistant the most knowledgeable of the bunch. (“It’s Google, after all.”)

But don’t take our word for it: , , , and the all have the Nest Audio on sale for just $79.99, so you can save $20 when you see what all the fuss is about.

The Nest Audio comes in five different colors (left to right): Sage, Sand, Sky, Chalk, and Charcoal.

As far as we can tell, that 20% savings is the Nest Audio’s biggest discount ever and one of the very few instances it’s been cheaper than $99.99. (The only other time we saw it go on sale was in mid-October when Best Buy ran a “buy two, save $20” deal ahead of Black Friday.)

If we had to pick one drawback of the Nest Audio, we’d have to call out its underwhelming sound quality — audiophiles should go with something from Marshall, Sonos, or Bose instead. (Or, if you want to stay in the Google family, grab the $399 Google Home Max.) But that’s not to say it isn’t trying: The Nest Audio comes equipped with a 19mm tweeter and a 75mm mid-woofer, and Google’s built-in Media EQ and Ambient IQ features automatically adjust its sound based on the acoustics of your environment and nearby noises, respectively. And compared to the original Google Home, its predecessor, it offers 75 percent more volume and 50 percent stronger bass.

The Nest Audio really hits its stride when it’s used as a smart home device — a new machine learning chip has its Google Assistant responding twice as fast as it did in the Google Home, and it’s easily paired with all of Google’s other smart speakers if you want to DIY a whole-home sound system.
