NEW DELHI: After a series of meetings between BJP and RSS leaders last week, the Sangh Parivar is trying to provide support to the Centre by making its affiliates work on the ground to create social pressure against China’s expansionist policies.

The meetings were held at the former residence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in central Delhi after Chattarpur’s Udasin Ashram, where the Sangh Pracharaks usually stay, had to be vacated when a senior RSS leader and two others tested positive for Covid-19. However, a number of BJP leaders denied any such meeting and said it was the usual visit of RSS leader Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi. BJP president JP Nadda and the party’s national organisation secretary BL Santosh were among those who attended the meetings in which issues related to the country’s borders, domestic affairs and cultural matters were taken up.

A senior RSS leader said the Parivar was working towards building social pressure to increase the “isolation of China in the world, starting with India”. “We have built strategic alliances with all important countries including Australia and Japan. We have seen how Maldives, Sri Lanka or Nepal or even the Organisation of Islamic Conference) can be used against us. We feel the direction in which the government has proceeded is right,” he said.

Lauding the government’s policies on “atmanirbharta (self-reliance) and swadeshi, the leaders said it was important to ensure “all affiliates work towards mobilising social sentiment against China’s might” and use “krishnaniti”. “China is not like any other country. We have to use a combination of diplomatic, military and social pressure against it. This can be done only when we create awareness about what all it is doing in terms of surveillance in areas other than the Galwan Valley such as Aksai Chin, parts of Ladakh, Shaksgam valley and Uttarakhand and the entire Arunachal Pradesh. They have been aggressively building infrastructure in our territories,” said a functionary.

The leaders also discussed the need for a strong communication mechanism to “dislodge agitations” and preempt the scale of dissent in incidents such as the anti-CAA agitations. Sangh leaders feel a better coordination among the RSS, Centre and BJP can help the narrative gain ground. The all-women protests across the country that went on for over 100 days had worried the Sangh leaders who felt it “was because of the misinformation that the protests attracted large numbers of people and should have been curtailed with effective dialogue.”

While the future of Kashmir was also part of the meetings, the leaders may have discussed how the Parivar’s struggle for Ram temple and Kashmir need to be spread more effectively so that people can take “cultural and historical pride” in them.

It was also decided that the “proactive communication” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage with people amid Covid-19 crisis and the efforts of the Hindu society to feed the needy has to be communicated more to people.

According to some leaders, the Sangh Parivar also expressed disappointment over the delay in introducing the National Education Policy that it believes is “not being seen as the priority”.

The discussions also focused on “cultural landscape and countering media narratives in India”. It was also conveyed that the loss of Nepal would be the loss of “civilisational continuity” for India. Sangh leaders have been in touch with people associated with the Pashupati Nath Temple over the changing cultural landscape in Nepal for many years.

According to Arun Anand, CEO of Indraprastha Vishwa Samvad Kendra, an RSS affiliate, and author of two books on RSS, from 1962, the RSS had passed several resolutions against the aggressive policies of China. All Sarsangachalaks, including MS Golwalakar, had asked India to be always on guard with respect to China.
