My Morning Routine: Vanilla Body Scrub, a Dream Clawfoot, and the Healthiest Hair

Hauling a clawfoot tub outside to create a little open-air spa enclave was one of the first things
doula Carson Meyer and her boyfriend did when they moved to Topanga Canyon just a few months before the quarantine
order. “It’s been the dreamiest gift to myself, especially right now, when our time outdoors is limited,” says
Meyer, who also cochairs the Natural Resources Defense Council’s Los Angeles leadership council (NRDC is a
nonprofit environmental advocacy group). The mornings she spends steeping out there, gazing up at the sky,
surrounded by giant fronds and potted herbs, are a beautiful kick-start to days spent helping clients prepare for
birth. “My work is all about educating people on the physiological process of labor and the choices and tools we
have in promoting a healthy birth and postpartum experience,” Meyer says. “During labor, I provide physical and
emotional support through breathwork, advocacy, and massage.” Since the COVID epidemic, most of what she does is
virtual. “It’s still a very intimate level of support,” she says, “but I’m looking forward to seeing my hospital
birth clients face-to-face again soon.”

Meyer’s own skin issues were the inspiration behind her cult-hit C & The Moon body scrub. “I mixed it
up in my kitchen a little over ten years ago for my very sensitive, very dry skin,” she says. “The friends and
family I gave it to loved it, so I turned it into a business. The organic oils in it really cling to your skin, so

Meyer’s been making her own clean products since she was a teenager. “My mom’s the reason,” she says.
“She’s been
advocating for the environment my whole life—she once grounded me for doing my nails in an unventilated room.
She’s worked with the NRDC for over twenty years; she’s the reason I joined. Recently, we lobbied for a regulation
bill banning chlorpyrifos, a neurotoxic pesticide linked to brain damage, which meant a lot to me. That bill
passing was a huge win for California.”

She’s still advocating for NRDC, working as a doula, and running her company, so Meyers’s days are
pretty full.
But the start of each is about as fantastic as it gets.

9 a.m.: I like to think of myself as an early riser, but ever since the stay-at-home order, I’ve been
honoring my
body clock and sleeping in. The first thing I do when I wake up is drink a glass of the skin superpowder from

minutes of Transcendental Meditation. Lately I’ve been getting interrupted by some sweet finches knocking at our

9:30 a.m.: My boyfriend is religious about his coffee-making process. It’s my job to start the
kettle, and he
takes it from there. We drink it Bulletproof-style, with grass-fed butter, collagen protein, and coconut oil. I
wish I had a healthier relationship with my phone, but I’m usually glued to the screen scrolling through Instagram
and returning emails by this point.

10 a.m.: I converted my office loft into a quarantine yoga studio. I also bought a mini trampoline, a
jump rope,
and some hand weights. I spend at least thirty minutes moving and stretching, and it drastically improves my day.

10:45 a.m.: Getting outside to feel the sunshine always boosts my mood, too. After working out, I
wash off in the
bath. I start by giving myself a head-to-toe lymphatic massage with my body scrub, then rinse it off.

11 a.m.: My hair is on the dry side, so I don’t shampoo often, but I condition every day. Rahua is
one of the

first

11:20 a.m.: I get out of the tub and dry off. If I need some extra hydration (my scrub is often enough to leave
my skin moisturized all day) I smooth on MUTHA Body Butter, which feels like you’re smoothing a stick of

11:30 a.m.: Ever since we started isolating, I don’t wear much makeup, just the occasional tinted moisturizer.
