Lockdown 5.0 starts tomorrow, here’s what it will look like in each state

Just after the Centre released guidelines for reopening the country after almost 70 days of a stringent nation-wide lockdown, several states across the country have decided to extend lockdowns within their borders to help in the battle against COVID-19.

While the central government has relaxed the lockdown across the country, containment zones have had theirs extended till June 30, however, some states are going all out in their restrictions.

Nationwide rules:

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs‘ guidelines for Unlock 1, in places not designated as containment zones, the following relaxations will happen in phases:

  • Phase 1: Initially, people will be allowed to go out of their houses, but with face masks and social distancing mandatory.
  • Phase 2: Schools, colleges and other educational institutions will open.
  • Phase 3: Metro services, international travel and places of entertainment will open.

Here’s what some states are planning:

Maharashtra (Extended till June 30):

The state has set out a phased action plan titled ‘Mission Begin Again’, that has a phased reopening plan as follows:

  • Phase 1: Outdoor physical activity to be allowed from June 3 onwards, as well as self-employed services including plumbers, electricians and carpenters.
  • Phase 2: All markets, shops will be allowed to open on an odd-even basis.
  • Phase 3: Private offices can reopen with up to 10 per cent strength.

West Bengal (Extended till June 15):

  • Lockdown to be extended only in containment zones.
  • Government office to function with 70% workforce, on a rotational basis.
  • Intra state movement of government and private buses will resume, masks and gloves mandatory for passengers.
  • The state is allowing production for TV and cinema to resume – with a 35 person cap on unit size – from June 1.
  • Places of worship to open from June 1, not more than 10 people allowed to gather.
  • Shopping malls, restaurants, and hotels can reopen from June 8.

Punjab (
Extended till June 30): All restrictions to be in line with Centre’s guidelines.

Madhya Pradesh
(Extended till June 15): The state is mulling reopening educational institutions from June 13, while all other restrictions remain the same.

Tamil Nadu (Extended till June 30):

  • Public transport will resume with reduced services from June 1, but buses will not be operated in Chennai, Kancheepurm, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet districts
  • The state is also considering allowing more employees at workplaces.
  • Shooting for TV serials allowed to resume from May 31.

Karnataka (Extended till June 30): Religious places, shopping malls, restaurants, and hotels can reopen from June 8.

Jammu & Kashmir (Extended till June 8): All restrictions to be in line with Centre’s guidelines.
