Although we’re months away from the iPhone 13 series, there have already been plenty of rumors, hinting at what we can expect from Apple
‘s 2021 smartphone line-up. Below is everything we know about the iPhone 13 right now.

iPhone 13 release date
Apple normally holds an iPhone event every year in early September, so we can expect iPhone 13 to be announced around that time. However, as 2020 was an especially difficult year for all, the iPhone event was delayed to October 13. We can’t rule out delays in 2021 also, even though currently there’s no information to suggest this being likely.
iPhone 13 price and storage
- Around $799 for the iPhone 13
We know that Apple wants to increase iPhone production in India
and move about 20% of its iPhone production out of China, but we’re yet to find out if this will have an impact on the price of future iPhones. As of right now, there’s nothing to suggest that we should expect a major change in the pricings of upcoming iPhones.
The iPhone 13 series would likely cost about as much as the iPhone 12 series:
- iPhone 13 mini – $699
- iPhone 13 – $799
- iPhone 13 Pro – $999
- iPhone 13 Pro Max – $1099
iPhone 13 name
It has been suggested that Apple could call the next iPhone “iPhone 12S”
instead of “iPhone 13”, as the phone will allegedly feature only minor upgrades over its predecessor. The number 13 is also considered unlucky in some countries, which could play a role in Apple’s naming scheme. However, currently there’s no leaked or official information to back this claim up.
iPhone 13 camera
The camera module of the iPhone 12
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors
) the iPhone 13’s ultra wide-angle camera will be upgraded to f/1.8, 6P (six-element lens) and will feature autofocus.
We can expect that the camera module itself won’t be changing drastically from the module seen on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11. As for the cameras that will be inside of it – the zoom camera is likely to return, alongside the main camera and the above-mentioned ultra-wide camera.
On January 9 of 2021, a report based on supply chain information claimed that iPhone 13 camera upgrades and an updated FaceID setup
are to be expected. The upgrades in question are said to include a “narrower” TrueDepth camera, which could potentially also mean a smaller notch.
A later report (February 2nd) from Barclays analysts tipped major camera upgrade for Apple’s entire iPhone 13 family
, notably improved ultra wide-angle camera capabilities. The iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max may be getting an f/1.8 aperture ultra-wide camera, up from the f/2.4 on the iPhone 12 series.
Additionally, the addition of Portrait Mode video recording has been mentioned by leakers. After recording an iPhone Portrait Mode video, users will reportedly be able to change the video’s depth of field to their liking.
iPhone 13 design
- The notch will be smaller in width
In 2020 Apple introduced a change to the appearance of its iPhone line up by designing the iPhone 12 series with flat edges instead of curved ones. This design is reminiscent of Apple’s well-regarded earlier phones such as the iPhone 5, and is in line with how the iPad Pro and 2020 iPad Air
look. Also on the iPhone 12 the signature notch was made smaller than it was on prior iPhones.
For the iPhone 13 series, we expect an even smaller, but still present notch and a very similar flat design like on the iPhone 12. In late March, a leak allegedly showing iPhone 13 glass panels
revealed that the iPhone 13 notch is indeed potentially going to be notably smaller in width. Supporting this, an April leak said to be showing iPhone 13 mini CAD renders
also featured the phones with a smaller notch and different positioning of their back cameras.
This is how the iPhone 13’s display and notch will look like, according to the above-mentioned leak from March
On January 15th, a Bloomberg report suggested that the iPhone 13 will finally get an in-display Touch ID fingerprint sensor
. We’ve had in-display sensors on Android phones for a while and considering the fact that many are wearing masks and thus finding Face ID cumbersome right now, the return of Touch ID, but modernized for 2021, seems plausible.
Several tipsters have also suggested that the iPhone 13 could be the first portless iPhone, relying exclusively on wireless charging via MagSafe. In late February, it was revealed that Apple is indeed testing how a portless iPhone could recover data
, suggesting that such an iPhone is coming eventually.
iPhone 13 display
The iPhone 13 series are likely going to sport flexible
OLED displays, instead of LCD. There are also expectations for the iPhone 13’s displays to have a super-smooth 120Hz refresh rate (similar to ProMotion on the iPad Pro), which wasn’t present on the iPhone 12 series reportedly due to battery life concerns
For the iPhone Pro and Pro Max models, it’s expected that the displays will be provided by none other than Samsung. And indeed, in late March of 2021, 120Hz LTPO displays from Samsung meant for the iPhone 13
were reportedly about to enter production, according to UBI Research.
As for display sizes, according to early iPhone 13 rumors
, we can expect that the iPhone 13 series will include phones with display sizes close to what the iPhone 12 series have, if not slightly larger. This means that potentially we’ll get the following:
- iPhone 13 mini – 5.4-inch display at a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels (476 PPI)
- iPhone 13 – 6.1-inch display at a resolution of 1170 x 2532 pixels (460 PPI)
- iPhone 13 Pro – 6.1-inch display at a resolution of 1170 x 2532 pixels (460 PPI)
- iPhone 13 Pro Max – 6.7-inch display at a resolution of 1284 x 2778 pixels (458 PPI)
iPhone 13 battery
Trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that Apple has freed up more physical space within the iPhone 13’s body so the iPhone 13 series can have larger batteries
. In addition, the iPhone 13’s A15 Bionic chip
could be more energy-efficient than the iPhone 12’s A14, which could also add to better battery life performance.
For reference, these are the battery sizes of the iPhone 12 models:
- iPhone 12 mini – 2227 mAh
- iPhone 12 – 2815 mAh
- iPhone 12 Pro – 2815 mAh
- iPhone 12 Pro Max – 3687 mAh
iPhone 13 features and software
The iPhone 12 charging wirelessly with a MagSafe charger
It’s virtually certain that iPhone 13 will have 5G support. Internally, the iPhone 13 series are likely going to be powered by the yet-to-be-announced Apple A15 chip. As previously mentioned, the iPhone 13 may also see new camera features, such as Portrait Mode video.
In terms of software, the iPhone 13 will be running iOS 15, which will likely be released in September, as many previous iOS versions were. We’re yet to find out what new software features iOS 15 will be bringing to the iPhone 13, but as previously mentioned, the phones could get Portrait Mode video recording.
