There are many types of sleep apnea itself. However, obstructed sleep apnea is more common in people. This type of sleep disorder or sleep apnea occurs when the muscle in the throat relax. This relaxation of the muscle I the throat blocks the airway. The major sign of sleep apnea is snoring while sleeping.

This closure of the airways may stop the breathing for at least 10 to 20 seconds. This stop in breathing can reduce the oxygen level in the body especially in the blood cells and increases the carbon dioxide in the body.

The person will awake when he experiences shortness in breath, after the person awake, the sleep gets normal itself. The person may experience this pattern for at least thirty minutes.

Some people who have obstructed sleep apnea assume that they sleep well throughout the night, they never remember the shortness of breath or snoring while sleeping.

Risk factors for sleep apnea

Various factors can create the risk of sleep apnea. However, many of them can only contribute to sleep apnea or worsen the condition.

These factors include:

Excessive weight – This is the common and major risk factor. More than 90% of people who experience sleep apnea are overweight. Fat around the throat contributes to the blockage of airways.

Smoking – Smoking is also a huge risk factor. According to a survey, people who smoke or are chain smoker experience the obstructed sleep apnea.

Asthma – Researchers have found that there is a close connection between asthma and obstructed sleep apnea.

Diabetes – People who have diabetes also have obstructed sleep apnea.

Family history – If any of your family members experience the obstructed sleep apnea, the chances are high, that this may transfer to another family member.

Narrowed airways – Some people naturally have narrow airways. If you have small airways naturally, the chances are high, you will experience the obstructed sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea Treatments
