Corona crisis revives unity among opposition parties | India News

NEW DELHI: The situation arising out of the Corona pandemic has revived the unity of opposition parties, after their joint efforts were dismantled following the 2019 Lok Sabha victory of the BJP-led NDA, to take on the Centre over issues arising out of the national crisis.
The 22 parties which met virtually through e-conference decided to have more such meetings in future to put forward their demands to the Narendra Modi government, while charting out a list of demands on Friday after a 4 hour meeting.
Twenty-two like-minded parties exchanged views on Friday on the extraordinary situation in the country arising out of the Covid-19 pandemic to agree that the economy has collapsed, all sections of society are facing acute distress with livelihoods having been destroyed and lives lost.
Accusing the Centre of “failing to discharge its responsibilities in a timely, effective and sensitive manner,” the parties said this is time for collective endeavour and it is important that the Centre reaches out and engages in a dialogue with all political parties in a systematic manner, listen seriously to suggestions from them, activate parliamentary institutions like standing committees and be genuine in helping the states, financially and otherwise.
Jointly they appealed to the Centre on Friday to consider the following demands:
Direct Cash Transfer of Rs. 7,500/- per month to all families, outside the Income Tax bracket, for six months. Rs. 10,000/- to be paid immediately, with the balance being paid equally across the remaining five months.
Free food grains— 10 kg to all needy individuals, each month for the next six months. Increase number of Mgnrega days to 200 with necessary budgetary support.
Free transportation for migrant workers to their native places and arrangements to rescue Indian students and other citizens stranded overseas.
Provide accurate and relevant information on Covid-19 infections and goalposts vis-à-vis testing, infrastructure and containing spread.
Restore Parliamentary functioning and oversight with immediate effect.
Reverse all unilateral policy decisions particularly the annulment of labour laws.
Procure immediately the rabi harvest at the MSP and provide assistance for the produce to reach the markets and provide seeds, fertilisers and other inputs to the farmers to help prepare for the kharif crop.
Release substantial funds to the state governments who are in the frontline of combating the pandemic.
Communicate in clear terms the Centre’s exit strategy from the lockdown, if any.
Consult state governments while allowing international/ domestic flights in their respective jurisdictions.
