Congress with Gupkar Alliance, to fight DDC polls together: Farooq | India News

SRINAGAR: National Conference president and head of People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) Farooq Abdullah on Sunday said that Congress was with the seven-party amalgam and would fight the District Development Council (DDC) polls along with the Alliance even as J&K Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir maintained his party would contest the elections on its own symbol.
Talking to TOI, Mir said he had called on Farooq at his Jammu residence on Sunday for 10 minutes to inquiry about his health but “never discussed politics”.
“The Congress is going to fight DDC polls on its own symbol and independent of any party. However, we have instructed our workers in various parts of J&K to help the candidate who seems more popular in the area to keep BJP nominees away from victory,” Mir said.
Meanwhile, J&K BJP and Apni Party lambasted PAGD, saying the amalgam’s decision to fight the DDC polls completely exposed its political doublespeak. The Alliance had announced its decision to contest the polls on Saturday.
PAGD was formed on October 15, with seven regional parties — National Conference, People’s Democratic Party, People’s Conference, Awami National Conference, CPM, CPI and J&K People’s Movement — joining hands to work for restoration of statehood and special status of J&K.
Apni Party spokesman Javid Baig said: “All the parties in this Alliance knew the ground realities but were just trying to find ways and means to hoodwink the people while aiming at grabbing power.”
He said it was only the Apni Party that had taken an unambiguous and explicit political stand since J&K’s special status was scrapped and the erstwhile state bifurcated into two Union territories last year. Baig said Apni Party never indulged in giving false hopes to the people but always stood firm on its pragmatic demands at all forums.
“We never showed the moon and the stars to the people and we still believe that there are only two institutions — the Supreme Court and Parliament of India — that have the power to restore the special status of J&K. Rest is all political gimmickry,” Baig said.
He said the political doublespeak of PAGD is palpable. “People are fully aware that PAGD is only a self-serving attempt by these (seven) parties that have utterly failed to provide safeguards to J&K’s special status during their tenures in power,” Baig said.
On the other hand, addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in Srinagar, party general secretary and Kashmir affairs incharge Vibodh Gupta lashed out at PAGD and termed it as “Gupkar Gang”. He said the decision of PAGD to contest DDC polls reflects the dual politics of those who are out to fight the Indian Constitution.
If the “Gang” is against the Constitution, then how come it is fighting the DDC polls under the same Constitution, he asked.
He said those from the “Gang” who would emerge victorious in the DDC polls would have to take oath under the very Constitution they are opposing.
Gupta said the dichotomy is key PAGD functionaries like Mehbooba Mufti, who has gone on record saying that she won’t touch the Indian Flag, is clearly ready to allow her party workers (who would win DDC polls) to take oath under the same flag.
