Congress party prior to the election cobbled up 10 parties led by the Grand alliance. The alliance has declared that it will form a high power committee to find out the reasons for its failure and will take up with the Election Commission the matter of EVMs. Congress party stated EVMs were found in the car of BJP candidate, there were instances where serial number of EVMs did not match.
Singh said, “Both Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Raijor Dal were formed as a reaction to CAA and against the policies of BJP. However, from their activities in the election BJP benefited. Prima facie those parties opposing BJP and CAA later went to BJP’s lap. Even BJP said that these parties were formed by us and they have cut Congress’s vote. The vote shares of Congress led alliance and NDA was almost similar.”
He said, “Due to these parties Congress lost almost 10 seats.”
Upper Assam witnessed bitter protest against Assam witnessed bitter protest in 2019 and early 2020 when the CAA — which aims to make minority communities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible to apply for Indian citizenship — was passed by Parliament. There was a large-scale violence curfew for several days.
Congress in Upper Assam in 2016 had won seven seats. Tea Tribe votes which are determining votes in 30 to 35 seats remained with BJP in assembly polls.
Congress said that it accepts the mandate and will sit in opposition.
Singh said, “Prior to election BJP led government rolled out schemes ensuring direct financial benefit and we hope this will continue post-election. We will continue to fight for increasing the daily wages of tea workers. Congress promised 356 per day and BJP had promised to take it to Rs 350.33.”
He added, “We hope that BJP fulfils its promises of providing jobs and controlling the price rise. I also ask the BJP to make its stand clear on CAA for it says one thing on CAA in West Bengal, another thing on Barak valley in Assam and keeps mum in other places.”
Congress also proposed to constitute a committee of allies to monitor COVID-19 situation and assist people of Assam within and outside the state.
Congress Rajya Sabha MP, Ranee Narah said that state congress leadership failed to provide the alternative which people were yearning to get. “ The policies were wrong and I will accordingly inform Congress leadership on this.”
