NEW DELHI: A CBI court on Wednesday acquitted all 32 accused in the demolition case of Babri Masjid, saying that the razing of the 16th century structure was not pre-planned and took place ‘spontaneously’ because of ‘anti-social’ elements. The judgement came as a big relief for the major BJP stalwarts who were accused in the 28-year-old case as the Lucknow court said no conclusive proof found against them.
Here is who said what:
Jai Shri Ram, chants LK Advani
Veteran BJP leader LK Advani, who was acquitted by the special court, welcomed the verdict by chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’, and said it came in “footsteps of another order which paved the way for my dream of seeing a Ram Mandir in Ayodhya”.
Advani, who was the face of the Ram Janambhoomi Movement in 1992, was acquitted along with all other 31 accused in the case. “It is a very important decision and a matter of happiness for us. When we heard the news of the court’s order, we welcomed it by chanting Jai Shri Ram,” Advani said in a video message.
Satyamev Jayate, says Yogi Adityanath
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath welcomed the acquittal of all 32 accused in the Babri mosque demolition case and said that the court verdict proved the maxim ‘Satyamev Jayate’ or truth prevails.
In a statement, he said that the verdict proved that various Hindu leaders and seers were “falsely implicated” by the then Congress government at the Centre, which was driven by its policy of political appeasement. The chief minister said that the Congress should now “apologise for its deeds” after the court judgment.
Truth has prevailed, says former Shiv Sena MP
Former Shiv Sena MP Satish Pradhan, who was an accused in the Babri Masjid demolition case welcomed a CBI special court’s verdict. “Truth has prevailed,” the 80-year-old former mayor of Thane, who attended the hearing through video-conferencing. Pradhan was once a trusted associate of Shiv Sena supremo late Bal Thackeray and helped the party grow in the Konkan region and Maharashtra.
Happy that all have been acquitted, says one of the karsevak
Local BJP leader Om Prakash Sharma, who was among the ‘karsevaks’ from Thane to Ayodhya in December 1992, also welcomed the court verdict, adding he was happy that all the accused have been acquitted.
The accused also include Uma Bharti and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh, during whose tenure the structure was pulled down, besides Vinay Katiyar and Sadhvi Rithambara.
