18 New Details We Learned From the Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life Showcase

Jack Sparrow, Davy Jones, and the world of Pirates of the Caribbean are set to collide with the world of Sea of Thieves in the free A Pirate’s Life expansion on June 22, and Rare has presented a showcase that dives deep into what makes this new adventure special for not only the players, but for the team who brought it to life.

Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirate’s Life for Me

The Pirates of the Caribbean-themed A Pirate’s Life expansion for Sea of Thieves will arrive free to all players on June 22 and will bring with it five Tall Tales that will tell an original story the begins with players rescuing Jack Sparrow after he stole the “greatest pirate treasure of all time – a Golden Key to other lands.”

Jack Sparrow used this treasure to find the pirate world of Sea of Thieves, but he didn’t come alone. Davy Jones has also found his way in and quickly discovers he doesn’t have as much power in this new land as he does in his own. He has no dominion over the waves, and he doesn’t control the pirate’s life and their ability to return from the land of the dead. This obviously does not make him happy.

Throughout this story, players will work with Jack Sparrow as a member of their crew to stop Davy Jones and save the pirate’s life.

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life Is a Love Letter to the Pirates of the Caribbean Films and Disneyland Attraction

In creating this new expansion, Rare wanted to bring the best parts of both the Pirates of the Caribbean films and Disneyland attraction into the game. Besides the additions of Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones, players will also run into recreated scenes from the Pirates of the Carribbean ride, they will hear familiar music inspired by iconic songs from the films and attraction, and they will be able to customize their pirates and ships to make their Pirates of the Caribbean dreams come true.

There will be a ton of themed content for players to unlock, and it includes everything from being able to dress up like Jack Sparrow and the crew of the Black Pearl to having the prison dog with the keys as a pet on your ship to decking out your ship to honor the legend and legacy of the most famous pirate ships.

The team at Rare wanted this update to feel as authentic as possible, and to do so they even invited one of Jack Sparrow’s stunt doubles from the films in full make-up and costume to ensure A Pirate’s Life was as true to its source content as possible.

A Pirate’s Life Features Jack Sparrow as a Crew Member, New Enemies, New Locations, and Much More

Jack Sparrow is much more than just another NPC, as he will be part of your crew and will help you in battle against Davy Jones’ ghost ships, Siren Statues, and more. Furthermore, he will be hanging around your ship and will tell you when your resources are low and will even allow you to take selfies with him.

A Pirate’s Life will also take players to brand new locations like the Sea of the Damned, Sailor’s Grave, and the Sunken Kingdom. An interesting note is that these new locations are linked to the main world by the Tunnels of the Damned. This area connects the game’s main world to the Sea of the Damned, allowing players to move where they need to go without impacting the main game negatively. Additionally, it also gives the team the possibility to “link the Sea of Thieves world with whatever we want.”

One of these locations, the Sailor’s Grave, also features a tavern, gambling den, a ton of lore, and much more just waiting to be found, including a Easter Egg in the form of a ship that should make fans very happy.

Throughout the adventure, players will encounter new enemies like Sirens, Ocean Crawlers, and more. There are different types of these foes, and some will even attack you with electricity, poisonous spores, massive crab claws, or the Trident of Dark Tides.

Speaking of the Trident of Dark Tides, this new weapon blasts a powerful attack at enemies and can be found and used by the player in A Pirate’s Life and in the main Sea of Thieves adventure.

The First Two Tall Tales of A Pirate’s Life Explained

In this showcase, Rare discussed a bit more of the first two Tall Tales in A Pirate’s Life, the first of which will have you searching for Jack Sparrow himself. Along the way, players will also find a Mysterious Castaway, who is the gatekeeper of these stories, and The Cursed Captain, a skull who you can carry around in your hand. Alongside helping you find Jack Sparrow, he will help you find secrets around Sailor’s Grave, comment on your dancing and sea shanties, and more.

The second Tall Tale will take you deep underwater, much further than ever before in Sea of Thieves, and will put you face-to-face with The Black Pearl and task you with finding Jack Sparrow’s compass. Unfortunately, it has been captured by the sirens and is chained to the bottom of the ocean. Players will also be able explore the Siren’s Citadel and interact with statues to raise and lower water levels to access new areas.

As previously mentioned, Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life will be available free for all Sea of Thieves players on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC on June 22, 2021.
